Project Results with People: Guiding Stakeholders

Are you stuck in a quagmire of politics?
Promising projects can often be threatened or even come to a sticky end when people are involved. And people – stakeholders – are in every project that ever runs. So can you navigate this delicate world and keep most of the people happy for most of the time? It’s tricky, but possible.
Every project is heavily influenced by its stakeholders, and there are usually more than you think. So a project manager is often keenly challenged by senior stakeholders, or those with different interests, viewpoints or backgrounds. This course covers the identification and categorisation of project stakeholders, and then goes on to embrace – with exercises – numerous stakeholder management techniques.
By the end of the course, attendees will be able to communicate intuitively and win the confidence of project stakeholders and senior management.
Who Should Attend?
This course is for new project managers as well as those who’ve practiced project management for a while. It’s intended for people who are comfortable with their technical skills, and who would like to increase their interpersonal credibility and performance.
The course will run for a single day, with an hour break for lunch and two twenty minute breaks mid-morning and mid-afternoon. The agenda is as per the following table. Please note that although every subject will be presented, the course instructor is flexible and may decide to adjust the course slightly to match the skill levels and expectations of the course attendees.

|Who are our Stakeholders||There are always more than you think. We’ll learn how to identify stakeholders and categorise them, and why this is so important especially at the project outset.|
|Types of Power||There are many ways you can have power and authority. All are relevant, but some are more effective than others in different circumstances.
|Leadership Styles||There are four principle leadership styles, and each is useful and effective in its own circumstances and conditions.
|Handling Conflict||What is conflict? How can we reduce conflict in a project, yet handle it if it occurs ? What techniques can be used?
|Dealing with Difficult People||Sometimes despite your best efforts, there are people who are simply difficult to handle. We will look at the reasons for this, and how to handle such people and situations.
|Negotiation||We all have to negotiate at some point. Indeed project managers will be called on to negotiate in two distinct parts of their job. We discuss this, how to negotiate effectively and to prevail even if the other party doesn’t realise that they are in fact in a negotiation.
|Winning Credibility at the Top Table||Ultimately, the success or failure of a technically competent project will be judged by the interpersonal and leadership effectiveness of the project management. We’ll discuss what we call in the management consulting business, “positioning”, In other words how to be viewed and understood as the natural leader of large complex projects, and the best choice to assure project outcome success.
